What is Worship?

What is Worship? Well, Dictionary.com defines worship as, “…a ceremonious rendering of honor and homage paid to God or a scared personage.” Sounds exciting, right? Well maybe that doesn’t help us out too much but Worship can be summed up more easily by saying that it’s when a group of people get together to say how great God is. Now this can be done in many ways. Some of the ways we do it are:

1. Through prayer. Which is simply talking directly to God.

2. Through Song. Which is just a fun way God created for us to say the kind of things we say in our prayers.

3. Through Communion. Communion is the act of a believer remembering that Jesus died for us so we could have life. This is something that Jesus specifically told us to do in Luke 22:14-20.

4. Through Offering. Offering is the giving of our resources back to God to help continue the ministry of His church. Now, we know what you’re thinking, this is where we ask for money right? Well, not exactly. Offering is a time where we give back to God’s church a portion of what He already gave to us. And God actually says in the Bible that He doesn’t want us to give just because someone tells us to, or because we feel like we have to. This is simply a time for those who are committed to Cornerstone’s work to give back to God and to put their trust in God. It is, more importantly, an act of worship, where we say that God can do better with our money than we can.

Our times of worship also include some kind of a message derived from the Bible. You might have heard this called (or call it yourself) a "sermon." At Cornerstone our message time is a part of our worship service to examine God's Word (the Bible) and how we should respond to that message.

So Worship, from all that we have discussed so far, is, very simply, a time to come and be with God and others.
